Diablo Immortal is a game that will always be remembered with its monetization strategy and almost invasive relationship with microtransactions. Game received huge criticism from all players around the world in this regard, but the company seems to disagree. Blizzard CEO Mike Ybarra recently made some comments about the monetization strategy that seems to support the current situation.
Ybarra says that they wanted to provide a free Diablo experience for everyone that takes all players until the end of the storyline. Only after that point, the game begins to direct players into paid content. According to Ybarra, “people are able to do %99.5 of everything in the game for free”. With this approach, he says that allowing millions of players to enjoy story mode fully for free is a good introduction for Diablo on mobile platforms.
On top of that, Blizzard says that most players are not spending any money. While this argument is not yet supported by official statistics, it is still a fact that Diablo Immortal raised up $24M in its first two weeks.
