A decision has been made in the well-known “Epic Games v. Apple” case, which has been followed by the media and players since August 2020. As of September 10, 2021, the judge issued a permanent injunction saying that Apple can no longer forbid developers from directing users to third-party payment options.
According to court documents published on the 9to5mac site, Apple needs to remove some of the restrictions it has placed. Before the lawsuit, players in the Fortnite game on the App Store could not make any payments other than Apple’s own in-app payment system, and Apple received a 30% commission with this system. In line with the decision taken, the desired payment method can now be used in the game. The tech giant has 90 days to implement the court decision on payment systems.
This decision concerns not only Epic Games and Fortnite, but all developers who release their games with the Apple payment system. Even crypto payment methods can be mentioned to avoid commissions. In such a case, it seems necessary for Apple to please its users. In fact, there has already been a reaction to this result, and Apple has lost 3.4%. Wedbush Securities analysts said that this decision could cost Apple $ 11 billion in revenue over the next two years.
