The new MMORPG from Amazon Games, New World, launched yesterday and saw a really impressive level of interest from players. Over 660.000 concurrent players were recorded in statistics of SteamDB, which inevitably caused server issues. Many players saw incredibly long queue times like more than ten hours, and queues with hundreds of thousand players.
Developers were quite quick to address the issues – yet not easy to solve, understandably – and they posted an update about the next step for handling the server issues. They said that they will expand the server capacity of New World.
When it comes to Twitch viewers count, it was not a different sight either. More than 884.000 viewers were recorded at some point, and the numbers were led by streamers like Asmongold and Shroud with tens of thousands of people watching.
New World is an MMORPG that takes players to the land called Aeternum, where magic goes rampant in the times called “The Age of Exploration”. Players find themselves shipwrecked on Aeternum, where ‘the fundamental laws of life and death are broken’.
Here is the description of the game from its press release also:
“New World offers players endless opportunities to fight, forage, and forge as they explore and conquer the island and uncover its dark mysteries. Players can band together in factions to vie for control of the map in massive player vs. player battles, or venture off solo (or in small groups) to explore Aeternum and learn its secrets.”
Vice President of Amazon Games, Christoph Hartmann says “More than 1m players have already set foot in Aeternum during our Beta tests, and today we are thrilled to welcome even more adventurers into New World. New World’s epic battles, skill-based combat, beautiful setting, and deep crafting and progression make it a game you can really get lost in. And because Aeternum is a living world, created to change and evolve over time, today is only the beginning—we have so much more in store for players.”
Compared to many other MMORPGs, New World puts an emphasis on skill-based combat mechanics. There are also various multiplayer combat experiences like wars (100 players on the field), outpost rushes (teams of 20 players from two competing factions for control), expeditions (5-player instanced dungeons) and invasions (50-player groups fight against waves of monsters).
To celebrate the launch, Amazon Prime members can grab the exclusive Pirate Pack through November 1st. The pack includes a Pirate character skin, emote, and $4.99 worth of in-game currency.
New World is now available on Amazon.co.uk and New World is also on Steam. The Standard Edition is £34.99, and the Deluxe Edition, featuring the Woodsman armor and hatchet skins, Mastiff house pet, Rock/Paper/Scissors emote set, and New World digital art book, is available for £43.99.
