Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan made some interesting comments about the reach of PlayStation 5 to the audience of gamers. He made it clear that he is actually frustrated with their top-tier products being “gated” to the current mass of tens of millions of gamers, and said that it should be actually around hundreds of millions of people around the globe.
Jim Ryan says “I really believe that the PlayStation 5 will be Sony’s biggest and best and most loved PlayStation yet. I would also like to see a world where the games that we make at PlayStation can be enjoyed by many tens of millions of people—perhaps hundreds of millions of people. I think some of the art that our studios are making are some of the finest entertainment that has been made anywhere in the world. To gate the audience for that at 20 or 30 million frustrates me.”
With recent decisions of staying exclusive to the console and the solid commitment about this topic, these remarks are actually a bit interesting. It is still very recent that they began releasing some of their critical titles to PC, showing the change in their approach to the PC platform. Moreover, there will be newer titles to follow this same path.
There is also another matter, streaming, which currently goes pretty well with their biggest rivals Microsoft. With Xbox Game Pass successfully implementing their steps for mobile platforms, PC and older consoles, Sony is currently a bit behind when it comes to reaching wider audiences.
PlayStation on the other hand is not really active when it comes to mobile. But Jim Ryan previously confirmed their intentions of carrying some of their iconic IPs to mobile platforms around March 2022.
