STALKER 2 developer GSC Game World has cancelled their plans to sell the ability to appear as an in-game NPC using NFTs. NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are still a very sensitive matter on many fronts as it is not a fully settled-down commercial method yet. Fans of the game criticised GSC Game World for both this reason and the potential items and abilities they decided to sell was not really worth for the effort and cost of NFTs.
On the other hand, platforms like Steam are known to be against NFTs and STALKER series may be harmed due to a possible conflict out of this project. This is mostly due to that it is very much open for exploits especially when “less informed” people are involved. The risk is obviously large and not many companies are willing to take it. While the idea of NFTs seem cute and fun, the processes in the background rarely reflect this.
In its current state, NFTs are largely perceived as “toys for ridiculously rich people” considering the mindblowing amounts of money thrown around. GSC Game World is not the only company that received criticism over plans to use NFTs as a mean to “diversify” the interactions, as Ubisoft has also received a very hot retaliation from users following their attempt to promote Ubisoft Quartz, a platform to sell NFT-based cosmetics.
