Without a doubt, Elden Ring has been one of the most successful games of this year. Being a prime example of a great development and marketing coming together, millions of gamers were locked on the title for weeks.
With that said, an interesting claim surfaced recently. Despite the huge success of Elden Ring, Mat Piscatella, the executive director and video game industry advisor at market research firm NPD said that the game did not have a place among top 10 most played games.
This finding actually shows us the strength of live-service games. Half of those titles are not even launched this decade, yet they have been dominating their own genres and the entire market since a long time. Elden Ring is reported to be at 20th place on this list.
Piscatella says that the live-service games with well-designed social hooks are attracting players very strongly. If this is the case, it will not be a surprise to see that Elden Ring may not be placing in top 10 on this list.
