Star Wars: Dark Forces is rebuilt by modders

Star Wars: Dark Forces was the first Star Wars FPS game, which was made before the Jedi Knight series. It was literally a “Doom clone” which was painted with Star Wars theme. Today, a few developers managed rebuild it with ZDoom, what they call the Force Engine 1.0, allowing us to play with modern PCs.

Right off the bat, the feeling of Doom is all over the place. Movement, shooting, enemies, structures, everything. But when it comes to making it into a Star Wars game, all the decoration will immediately suck you in. Sounds, textures, music, everything is properly made into a Star Wars theme.

With this initial release, we are able to play with a bunch of nice quality-of-life features such as mouse look and high resolution. Another good improvement is the GPU rendering support rather than the software renderer. Last but not least, a mod loader is there for some customized content.

While the Force Engine is a paid material you need to purchase first, its prices are low enough. If you are into such oldschool FPS games and specifically Doom clones, this one should keep you busy for a nice while.
