The Callisto Protocol is coming to become one of the horror masterpieces, and this time we are hearing quite exciting details about how it will achieve it. Back in Gamescom 2022, there were some details shared about the “variable environment” system in the game. This is the key for a very genuine scare.

Chief Technical Officer of The Callisto Protocol, Mark James, says that this feature will allow both players and enemies to interact with the environment and leave some clues about what they have done. This will turn everything into a potential hint about what is going on around you, and it will usually be scary when you notice a change which is not caused by you.

For example, if an enemy is behind you, it can intelligently find a route through vents to reach you and leave a vent cap broken on the ground. When you notice that cap was not there merely minutes ago, you can imagine the chills up your spine. Another example is the dead bodies you might come across, which are usually the best signs to notice when you are about to wind up dead too if you are not careful enough.

This will happen everywhere you could wander, and game relies on the SSD technology to process large amounts of data without compromising anything. Most games use this ability to create huge open-world environments that are usually static, but The Callisto Protocol reverses it. Since it has a small and linear world, they made it dynamic and more alive. This includes smart enemy behavior too, and all these details tell us why The Callisto Protocol is probably going to be a horror masterpiece.
