Sega revealed the Sonic franchise sales numbers

Sonic is one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time, as it saw three decades during its lifetime. 90s was its most glorious and shiny time as the first games on older consoles were huge hits. As much as 2000s and 2010s may not seem as great as 90s for Sonic franchise, the name still lives on and developers are working on the series to bring some new taste to its fans.

With free-to-play titles such as Sonic Dash, Sonic Runners, Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom and Sonic Runners Adventures, the series reached to new heights despite the microtransactions in the game. Mobile game market became a second wind for the series, especially combined with the free-to-play model. Hundreds of millions of downloads recorded in the mobile titles alone.

According to Sega, the entire Sonic franchise actually surpassed 1.5 billion units. It is not sure if Google is counting re-downloads, but still the statistics are incredible. Sega does not reveal the statistics on premium games though. Next game for the franchise is Sonic Frontiers, and it is expected to be released on 8th of November for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch and PC.
